Botox® is an purified toxin that is injected to weakens facial muscles that are responsible for facial and neck wrinkles. Botox® can also change the shape of the face by elevated the eyebrows or corners of the mouth. Botox® has also be used to treat hyperhidrosis in the hands and underarm areas.

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is abnormally excessive perspiration in the hands, feet or axilla. The cause of primary hyperhidrosis is unknown, although some surgeons claim that it is caused by sympathetic over-activity. Anxiety can exacerbate the situation for many sufferers. A common complaint of patients is that they get nervous because they sweat, then sweat more because they are nervous. Other factors can play a role; certain foods & drinks, nicotine, caffeine, and smells can trigger a response. Botox injections are used to disable the sweat glands. The effects can last from 4-9 months depending on the site of injections. The procedure when used for underarm sweating has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

More than three million BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments were administered in 2006. Approximately 97% percent of patients were definitely satisfied with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments, according to a survey of approximately 1,000 patients conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Most side effects are temporary and typically associated with the injection itself, such as localized pain, tenderness, redness and/or bruising.

Serious heart problems and serious allergic reactions have been reported rarely.
